Breaking News on Howard University's campus

Social Isolation is one of the most concerning issues that plague the student body at Howard University. Students are choosing to live away from their support systems, which are essential to their well-being, especially during a time of need and/or crisis. Many students are experiencing separation anxiety. Students who limit social interactions, contacts, and relationships with classmates, family, and friends are a major concern. If prolonged, social isolation could lead to mental illnesses. Anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and other mental stressors could lead to mental disorders. 

Another issue that could be plaguing the current student body is fear. Most students worry about contracting COVID. Attending in-person classes (seminars, labs, library, cafeteria) and school-wide social events on and off campus increase chances of contracting viral diseases. Students worry about the possible impact an infection would have on their physical health, mental health and emotional health. Subconscious worry about how it would impact their coursework and their ability to complete the semester could be an underlying fear. Students might also be fearful of another world-wide pandemic. They might fear the possibility of having their freedom being taken away again. Having to quarantine and socially isolate impacted the entire world. Unintentional feelings of fear and worry might be a plague students are experiencing, which could ultimately impede their mental health. 

The college experience should not have a negative impact on students’ mental health. Howard provides support by making resources available and accessible to the college community. Resources include but are not limited to counselors, doctors, peer counselors and social groups. Students are also referred to an on-campus counseling center that offers individual and group counseling. These supports can help students find a healthy balance of academics, social commitments, job responsibilities, and relationships. Living on a college campus that promotes a healthy balance will increase the chances of college life being one they will remember fondly.
